October 31 Very Long WeekThis week I worked more than 12 hours every day, a couple of times 14 hours. I met with people that live in 4 different time zones and shared a laugh with people from a completely different culture. By all measures it was fun, but right now I want to sleep.
October 19 Going Back Home in The MorningA lifetime ago it was not uncommon for me to get back home early in the morning after a party. It is very weird to take a bus surrounded by people going to work still dressed with party clothes :)
I found the American college version from College Humor (sorry, no embedding).
October 18 RumspringaI just found something amazing about the Amish. I don't know much about them, just the usual movies and TV coverage, so finding something new is not that surprising. Two years ago, after a deranged man shot and kill several Amish children, they forgive him after a couple of days. I would have pushed him into a woodchopper, extremities first to make it last, so their attitude impressed me. I always wondered about how isolated they really are. After all, despite what TV says, they do buy seeds and fertilizers, and they do sell furniture in a semi-industrial fashion. And if their kids are isolated, how could they exercise free will? Do they choose to be Amish? Can they leave? They have their own language, clothes, schools, traditions - it must be hard to break away. I found a documentary (The Devil's Playground) that sheds some light. Of course it might very well be propaganda, but it is short and seems reasonable. According to the documentary Amish teenagers have a period of time, from 16 to 21 years old, that they are supposed to run around. The Rumspringa period literally means "run around" and they do all the stupid things stupid teenagers do, including drugs, getting drunk and having sex. Then they are supposed to choose whether or not they want to join the church. If they do join the church, they have to give up everything and live like a traditional Amish. If they decide to live no one from their community ever talks to them again. They are shunned. October 10 A Fairly Simple Explanation of CDOsCDOs, or Collateralized Debt Obligations, are one of the many investment options invented on the last couple of years and partially to blame for this mess. The presentation below tries to explain how they work in a simple manner. For me what it actually does is to explain how dishonest the rating agencies are.
I don't think free markets are actually free. Any bank or ratings agency taking a conservative position over the last 10 years would underperform more aggressive banks and investment companies. Investors would move their money to the more aggressive and seemingly infallible competitors (given the market was climbing up and up). Conservative banks and investment funds would be rated lower and fail.
Because they are not free in any circumstance is that I prefer government oversight. At least it levels the playing field a bit and reduces the damage.
October 08 McCain is CrazySomeone pointed out that McCain and Obama did not shake hands at the end of the debate. High class...
Now, for something completely different before the world ends,...
